The issue
The vinyl panels on the sofa armrests were peeling, and the customer initially asked us to apply patches.
Instead, we recommended a better, longer-lasting solution: replacing the damaged vinyl panels with genuine leather. The customer agreed, resulting in a more durable repair and an upgraded appearance.
Repair Process
When vinyl starts peeling it is inevitable process. Any kind of repair the surface with compound and coloring won’t last long.
So we decide to disassemble the armrest and replace all vinyl panels with leather ones.
Re-sewing the panels
The first step was to cut new replacement panels from a leather hide. Fortunately, we found a genuine leather that closely matched the original in both color and texture.
Attention to detail: When stitching two leather pieces together to create a French seam, it’s important to flatten the seam allowances with a special seam roller. This ensures the edges lie smooth and flat, resulting in a clean, professional finish.
